The OCTOBER Weekday Walk will be on THURSDAY 29th and, due to a very tight schedule for a trip to Malaga the next day, will be a repeat of an urban walk I first organised in March 2023.
This is a very pleasant walk in the heart of city which I have done a number of times, along the Forth and Clyde Canal and through Kelvingrove Park, starting and finishing at the Scottish Canals Head Office, where we will meet at 10am.

Cars can be parked at the end of the short Applecross St. which can easily be found by driving north from St Georges Cross, up Possil Road, left into Ellsmere St., and first left into Applecross St., following Scottish Canals signs from Possil Rd. Parking is available at the end of the street or along the verge.
The walk will start at the footbridge over the canal adjacent to the parking area and will carry on along the southside canal footpath passing Firhill Football stadium on the left. The path carries on along the canal with Maryhill Rd. below on the left. After about 2km the Stockingfield canal junction is reached with the right fork heading for the Forth and the left to the Clyde. At this point there is the new, very elaborate £13.7 bridge system linking the canal paths. From here we take the left fork to the series of magnificent Maryhill Locks which take the canal level down to the aqueduct crossing the River Kelvin. This aqueduct was constructed in 1790 and is one of the largest, at 400ft long, to be built since Roman times.
The route now descends to the Kelvin and follows the river, past the turn off to the Botanic Gardens then under Queen Margaret Drive. Shortly after, the route approaches Kelvingrove Park after passing under Kelvinbridge, approximately 8km from the start. We will then carry on through Kelvingrove Park and along behind the Art Gallery (apparently actually the front) until we reach Dumbarton Road. At this point there is ample scope for some refreshments with possibilities being the excellent Three Judges or Lismore pubs.
For the return route we will take the nearby Kelvinhall Subway to Cowcaddens Subway and follow the short 1km route from there up to the canal at Spiers Wharf and back to the start point at the Scottish Canals Headquarters.
The route in total is about 12km (7.5 miles) and is mostly level with limited inclines, and the likely time is about 3-3.5 hours.
If a slightly shorter route was desired the subway could be taken from Kelvinbridge to Cowcaddens which would reduce the distance by about 3km.
If you would like to go on this walk, please let me know by Wednesday 28th October.
