Special Pennine Way Backpacking Trip (part 3 final)
from Sunday 3 to Thursday 7 June 2018

Map details are available from Allan ...

This is now a past outing .. you can read about it soon!

Having completed the first two parts of the Pennine Way in June 2016, Eadale to Hawes, and June 2017, Hawes to Greenhead, it is proposed to walk from Greenhead to the end of the Pennine Way at Kirk Yetholm .. a distance of about 62 miles over 5 days. The outline route, based on hostel accommodation, is given below ...

Outline Route

Day 1 (Sunday) Greenhead to Twice Brewed (Youth Hostel) – 7 miles.
We'll travel by train to Haltwhistle via Carlisle, then by local bus to Greenhead, where our walk begins. Exact time to be confirmed, but probably a late morning start from Glasgow Central.  This shorter section follows Hadrian's wall.  There is a new Youth Hostel at Twice Brewed (£15 pp). YH does breakfast and evening meals and there is a pub nearby.

Day 2 (Monday) Twice Brewed to Bellingham (Hostel) – 14 miles.
No meals are available at the Hostel (£21 pp), but there's a good pub in Bellingham for dinner, and a well-stocked Co-op to buy lunch and snacks.

Day 3 (Tuesday) Bellingham to Byrness (Hostel) – 14 miles.
This is mainly a walk through the forest on forest roads.  The plan is to stop at Forest View Walkers Inn for 2 nights, where a 2-night dinner bed and breakfast package is offered.  This includes a minibus pick up from around the halfway point on the Cheviot Hills crossing, and return the following day.  The cost is currently 105 pp which does not seem unreasonable, but once booked would not be refundable.

Day 4 (Wednesday) Byrness to Windy Gyle – 13 miles.
A short climb up on to the Cheviot Hills for the start of the 25 mile crossing to Kirk Yetholm.  Minibus pick up after about 13 miles and return to Byrness.

Day 5 (Thursday) Windy Gyle to Kirk Yetholm – 13 miles.
Minibus return to below Windy Gyle and continue along the Cheviot ridge and down to Kirk Yetholm.  4:15 bus from KY to Kelso, bus to Galashiels then train to Edinburgh and on to Glasgow.

What next?

Please let me know as soon as possible, and preferably by Wednesday 28 February if you intend to come on this walk.

At this time, I'll contact the Forest View to see if the accommodation is available. Twice Brewed and Bellingham currently have beds available.
