Day Trip to the Moorfoot Hills
on Saturday 16 July 2016

Map required is LandRanger 73 Peebles, Galashiels & surrounding area,
but you can download the relevant map section below ....

This is now a past outing.  Like to read about it?

As this is a car pool outing we should meet at Cathcart by 7:55 am to arrange the transport and leave by 8:00 am.  We'll be travelling via the M8, the Edinburgh Bypass to the Straiton Junction then the A701 to Penicuik and the B6372 and a minor road to Moorfoot (GR NT292 527).  There is car parking space beside Gladhouse Reservoir. The journey should take about 1 hour 30 minutes and arrangements can be made to pick up people en route or to meet at the start point for the walks.

At the end of the walks we should all meet up again at The Roadhouse Bar in Penicuick for refreshments and to exchange the day’s stories.  We plan to leave there no later than 5.00 pm which would mean that we should be back at Cathcart for around 6.30pm.

Proposed Routes

Blackhope Scar (651m):

Leaving Gladhouse Reservoir continue along the road to Moorfoot Farm then turn south towards Gladhouse Cottage. Just before the Cottage take the left fork, cross the River South Esk and continue along the track for about 1.5km. Take the left fork which rises more steeply east before emerging onto the open ground above the Kipps. A faint path continues southwards over boggy ground for approximately 2km rising gently towards the summit and trig point of Blackhope Scar (NT485 483).

Descend SW towards the turbines at Emly Bank windfarm. At the col, it is possible to descend north, following the burn to rejoin the land rover track and return to Moorfoot Farm.

Distance 14 km  (9 mls)
Total ascent 450m
Likely time 4 hours

Dundreich Hill (623m):

From the col below Emly Bank, ascend to gain the windfarm track past Emly Bank (605m) and around via Bowbeat Hill (626m) before turning northwest and north. At the end of the windfarm track ascend open moorland north west before detouring west to the summit of Dundreich Hill (623m). The return to Moorfoot farm and the cars is made over Jeffries Corse before decending grassy slopes to rejoin the outward track near Gladhouse Cottage.

Distance 18 km  (11 mls)
Total ascent 600m
Likely time 5 hours

Other Routes

Other routes could include an ascent of Torfichen Hill (13km, 310m ascent, 3 hr 30min) or an ascent of Dundreich alone via the land rover track (12km, 400m, 3hr 30min).
