New Year Day Trip to Arthur's Seat and Holyrood Park
on Saturday 5 January 2019

Map required is LandRanger 66 Edinburgh, Penicuik & North Berwick,
but you can download and print a close-up map section below ....

This is now a past outing.  Like to read about it?

This New Year we're heading east to Edinburgh to explore the summits and crags within Holyrood Park, finishing on the summit of Arthur's Seat. Even although it's only 250m high, the surrounding terrain is extremely rugged .. and if you haven't been here before, now's the time to climb hills with attitude, not altitude!

Arthur's Seat

This trip will be by car pool, meeting at the car park at Dunsapie Loch at 9.30am.  This should be early enough to avoid the crowds which may be on the hills later in the day. Please let me know if you would prefer not to drive and be picked up around the Cathcart area, or somewhere en route, and I can organise accordingly.

The driving route will be to the M74 at Polmadie, then on the M73 and M8 to the Edinburgh City Bypass. I'm proposing to avoid the hell of Corstorphine and Haymarket by taking the bypass to the Straiton junction, then turning north on the A701 to Cameron Toll, to the Commonwealth Pool and into Holyrood Park from there.

After the walk, I'm proposing to stop by the Toby Carvery at Mortonhall .. which has a nice bar area and plenty of car parking!

Toby Carvery

Proposed Route

From the car park, it's a 1km road walk westwards to the foot of Salisbury Crags with great views of Duddingston Loch. We'll take the path above the Crags and enjoy the views over to the west, then descend almost to the Holyroodhouse car park. We'll then ascend to the ruins of St Anthony's Chapel and continue to Whinny Hill. We'll then cross to Arthur's Seat and enjoy the views not only of Edinburgh, but also across the Forth, across to the Pentlands and to the Forth Bridges. We'll then make a direct descent to Dunsapie and the cars.

Distance about 5km (3 miles)
Total ascent about 300m
Likely time 2 - 2.5 hours

In the event of poor weather, or of an impassable M8, plan B would be to postpone until Sunday 6th .. let me know if this is likely to suit you ....
