Heading past the visitor centre, we shall follow the north side of Harlaw reservoir then Threipmuir reservoir until Redford Bridge then turn south past Bavelaw Castle to reach open ground. The Red Road climbs steadily past Hare Hill until it crests the ridge to the south of West Kip (551m).
From West Kip there is a short descent and reascent to East Kip (534m) then the ridge continues to Scald Law (579m). Descending north east to the saddle before Carnethy Hill we follow the path descending steeply to The Howe. A quick trip to the top of Carnethy Hill (573m) and return would add 2km, 140m of ascent and 45mins of time.
From The Howe, the path goes through the narrow gap of Green Cleuch then contours along the side of Black Hill before descending to the end of Threipmuir reservoir. The return to the car park is via the weir at the end of Threipmuir reservoir.
Distance (excluding Carnethy Hill) | 16km (10 miles) |
Total ascent | 600m |
Likely time | 4 - 5 hours |
