BEN LUI BECKONS
23 hardy hikers of the SN/SP Hillwalking Club attacked Ben Lui on Saturday 11 August 1990.
The bus left Cathcart at 8am and threaded its tortuous way up Loch Lomondside to Crianlarich, then on to Tyndrum and Glen Lochay.
The first obstacle was the crossing of the River Lochay, normally easily traversed on stepping stones, but now about a foot higher than usual. It must have been a wet week around Tyndrum! Then a steep ascent through the forest on to the slopes of the mountain.
Here's where the party divided into 2 groups .. those preferring a low-level walk through the Ciochan Beinn Laoigh to the River Cononish and back to Tyndrum, and those heading for the summit.
And the overcast weather started to brighten, giving the summit party good views over Dalmally and Cruachan, Glen Falloch and Ben Lomond, and north to the Blackmount. Again the party divided .. 4 going on to a second summit, Beinn a'Chleibh, with the rest descending to Cononish by the steep northeast ridge before returning to Tyndrum.
By 5.30pm all were assembled at the Invervey Hotel for the customary refreshment and discussion of the day's events. For instance, who accepted a lift from the Mountain Rescue who happened to be on Ben Lui on exercise?? And who decided to take such an interesting descent from Beinn a'Chleibh???
