Day 3: Friday 31 May
We woke to find that the wind had abated and that the cloud level had lifted. After breakfast, we loaded the bus and said our goodbyes, then drove to start the climb of Galtymore. We parked next to an interesting sign informing us of a "Dangerous Beach" .. which was duly photographed.
Setting off, we followed the track which provided us with an easy ascent. We eventually left it to climb Galtybeg. Having reached this top, we walked along the ridge in the wind to bag Galtymore. Taking shelter in a gully below the cross, we had lunch before returning to the minibus.
Then it was time to set off for Cork, the second city of the Republic. It was a straightforward journey, and before long we had arrived to drive along the banks of the River Lee and into the city. We took the opportunity to stop at a petrol station to fill up with diesel. However, no-one could get the filler cap off! We decided to book into Sheila's Budget Accommodation Centre instead.
Having got ourselves settled in, and also managed to get the diesel cap off the bus, Andy, Arlene, Duncan and Janet went off to hire bikes to ride to Blarney while the rest of us took the minibus, stopping at a petrol station on the way. Blarney Castle is set in beautiful grounds, and after paying our entrance money, we strolled around enjoying the surroundings before we dutifully climbed to the top of the Castle. With the exception of Willie, we all kissed the Blarney Stone.
At night, we ate out in one of the local pubs, along with a few pints of stout. The food was good and we had a relaxing evening before wending our way back to settle down for the night.
